I remember when I was a young boy, when all of my friends and I would be outside playing games, and when it came to a game that required teams, there would be a captain for each team. One captain would look out and choose the best player available; and then the next captain would do the same as the first captain did. This would go on until the last player was taken. In order to have a game, it required that we had to be divided up so that we could compete. We laughed and joked with each other, and after the game we would still be friends. We would play games all day long until the street lights came on and we knew we better get in the house quickly. The good thing about those days is that after we played against each other, we remained friends.
Unfortunately, we live in a very polarizing society. We have chosen sides, and have become antagonistic to one another. We have allowed society to divide and cause us to be unpleasant with each other. It is imperative that we understand that a house divided cannot stand. People are lining up behind various thoughts, ideas, movements and leaders. Opinions are formed about those who do not see things the same way. Horrible remarks are made about someone because they hold a different view. It is okay to disagree, but let us not be disagreeable. There will always be different viewpoints.
There is a proper way to choose which side to be on; and that side is the one the Lord is the Captain of. I am reminded of the time the Children of Israel were finally in the Land of Promise, after so many years of wandering in the wilderness. The Lord spoke to Joshua and told him to renew the rituals of the sign of the circumcision and the celebration of Passover. These rituals reminded God’s people of their favored status with Him. One day, Joshua was surveying Jericho when he saw a man standing in front of him with a sword in his hand. Joshua approached the man and asked him, “Are you for us, or are you for our enemies?” The man said, “No, but I am the Commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” (Joshua 5:13-15).
Joshua’s inquiry regarding which side the man was on was immediately met with a rebuke. Joshua was informed by the man that He did not come to take any side, but that it was imperative that Joshua and Israel line up on the LORD’s Side.
Just like the Children of Israel were lined up on the right side; we too, must line up behind the Lord for guidance in all matters of Life. He is the only way for us to make it in society. Proverbs 14:12 states, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (ESV). Make sure you choose the right side. I promise you, you will always be on the winning side.
Your servant in Christ,
